You can choose to create a CD that uses Linux as the underlying operating system or one that uses WinPE, a Microsoft-provided 'preboot environment' version of Windows, like the one you see when you run an installer that installs Windows on your hard disk. I prefer WinPE-based boot disks because their hardware support matches the hardware support in Windows itself, and I've had bad experiences with Linux-based boot disks that can't see all the hardware on my system. To get a WinPE-based CD, I first had to download a 1.7 GB WinPE installation disk from Microsoft, then reboot my system, and after all that, the wizard didn't offer to a burn a disk directly, but instead made me create an ISO image file, which I finally burned to a CD to get the WinPE-based disk. Both the emergency disk and the main program include a Recovery Expert that lets you restore deleted and, in some cases, damaged partitions. I experimented with this feature by deleting a partition on a spare drive, and the Recovery Expert restored the partition, but I wasn't able to test it on a damaged disk, so your mileage may vary.
Boot Management Another feature available from the Linux-based emergency disk, but not from the WinPE-based disk, is a proprietary boot manager called Acronis OS Selector. When installed, it displays a graphic menu on startup, from which you can select an operating system to boot from, or perform basic partition-management functions. You'll need a very good reason to use a non-standard proprietary boot loader when Windows and Linux both provide excellent boot loaders that can be managed by any modern disk utilities, and I can't think of any reason strong enough for me. I installed the OS Selector long enough to confirm that it works, and then removed it. Before you consider using it, keep in mind that it works only with traditional disks with an MBR (Master Boot Record) partition scheme, not large modern disks that use the GPT (GUID Partition Table) method. Acronis Disk Director 11 Home is a powerful and effective tool, but, despite its name, I'd hesitate to recommend it to most home users. Too many of its features ought to be better-hidden from beginners, and too many of its features need to be better-explained in their dialog boxes instead of in a help file.
